Cost of clearing container of 40ft or 20ft at sea ports in Nigeria depends on the documentation requirements, the value of the goods, and the shipping company alongside with the customs agent that handles the process. Terminal and shipping charges varies on the shipping companies in Nigeria. The transportation of the goods from the port to the warehouse of the consignee will also add to its cost

Customs clearance exercise is the process whereby Nigeria customs service and other relevance port agencies examine the consignments shipped to Nigeria. The process involves physical examination, documentation information tally with the goods in the container. The duties' values declared will be looked into to know if there are no discrepancies between the information on documents and the goods to be examined.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR CUSTOMS CLEARANCE THAT ADD TO COST OF CLEARING CONTAINER:

  • Original Bill of Lading from the shipping company
  • 1 copy CCVO (Combine Certificate of Value and Origin) (Form 16)
  • Pro-forma invoice
  • PAAR – Pre-Arrive Assessment Report
  • Assessment Notice from Custom agent that handles it
  • Form 'M' (Central bank of Nigeria Form Submission can be applied for at Nigeria banks
  • Packing list showing the description of the goods and its dimension.
  • Customs Duty Payment Confirmation from bank you open Form M
  • SONCAP certificate, NAFDAC import Permit or other Government Agencies import permit.

CHARGES INVOLVE IN CLEARING 40FT CONTAINER

Deposit for 40ft container: N200,000 per container within Lagos or Portharcourt, Outside Lagos and Portharcourt is N400,000

Shipping company charges: N170,000 NGN

Terminal charges: N250,000 NGN

Punching: N10,000 NGN Per Container

Custom documentation: N100,000 NGN

Automatic Demurrage and Detention fees: it depends on number of free days from shipping company and the number of containers

Agent fees: N250,000 NGN

Import duties based on the HS code declared % (CIF)

CISS (Comprehensive Inspection Supervision Scheme) 1% of value declared (CIF)

Ports Surcharge – 7% of the import duty

ETLS – 0.5% of CIF

VAT – 7.5% of CIF + 7.5% of the above calculations

Even if you have 0% import duty on your goods. You will still need to pay other charges above.

COST OF CLEARING A 20FT CONTAINER

Deposition of 20ft container: N100,000 NGN per container within Lagos or Portharcourt, Outside Lagos and Portharcourt is N400,000

Shipping company charges: N100,000 NGN

Terminal charges: N120,000 NGN

Punching: N10,000 NGN

Custom documentation: N50,000 NGN

Agent fees:N250,000 NGN
